design indaba 2011

i had a ball yesterday at the design indaba and could easily have spent the entire day there. i was beaming with pride for my friends lauren fowler, marietjie beeslaar, genevieve motley and frances kierman who had the most beautiful stalls! gen gave me a present of a bicycle brooch and necklace which everyone stopped me to ask about for the rest of the day! when i told them the brooch was called the 'thaya' brooch, named after me, they gave me the crazy lady look and moved swiftly on. even though i don't know anything about the store, i fell in love with the ikhaya stand. they create eco-aware products, furniture and products and stock some lovely local design. i flirted with the liesel trautman store, cooed at the fashion section, stroked the felt lampshades at the fringe arts section and ran through the jewellery section so as not to be drawn in by all those shiny, shiny jewels. we weren't allowed to snap any pics, so you'll just have to believe me when i tell you that it was awesome.

the old biscuit mill

i couldn't believe my ears the other other when i was chatting to someone about the old biscuit mill and they said, 'but isn't it only open on saturdays?' people seem very confused about the difference between the neighbourgoods market and the actual venue, the old biscuit mill. the mill is open throughout the week and is possibly the most creative retail venue in south africa. i wrote about my favourite places at the mill for the sa-venues blog here.

town day

i had a 'town day' today and it was amazing. i ran so many errands but they were all pretty cool ones, including collecting my dress from diana, who owns 'spence' - one of the best local online fashion stores. i couldn't really find a nice picture of me wearing my new sailor dress, but here's an idea. i also framed a bunch of illustrations i've been collecting (and have won) over the years, including this bird by lauren fowler. isn't she beautiful?

my picnic

i had a short and sweet little birthday picnic (because my birthday was on a monday) and took a few instant pics with my fijifilm. it was both mine and my friend shannyn's borndays yesterday, so samantha brought peppermint crisp cupcakes on a tray that read, 'happy born day, bitches!' love it.

new shop!!!

huge news! i'll be opening a new (gorgeous/cute/amazing) shop in muizenberg by mid-april, which will form part of a collective with a huge studio space behind it where my friends will be creating and doing things all day. not only will i be stocking all the beatnik things you love (handmade local high-end quirky design goods) but i'll also be selling vintage bicycles, bicycle baskets and other new things! we'll also be in the same road as the skermunkil shop! i'll keep you updated and let you know when you visit our awesome space as soon as its ready to be shown off. wooohoooooo!!! we're going to do some amazing things with this space...it's all so inspiring.

today is my birthday and i'll be celebrating with friends later. i love this bearded man cake someone sent me a picture of on twitter. i must have this cake!

goue vallei

we had such an amazing weekend at the goue vallei campsite in citrusdal. when you camp there, you can book the entire place for just your friends and family and have the campsite, beach, boat, tubes and ablution block all to yourselves! they also have a freezer, hot showers, pretty tent spots, braais, stools and a table. it was so relaxing and so beautiful. beatnik totally approves!
