yuppie chef, i love you. i want to have your pretty little heart-shaped le creuset babies. i want you to fill my life with happiness and the envy of my neighbours. i want to gaze upon your kitchenaid mixers first thing in the morning and feel like a love sick teenager. i want to make excuses to come home at lunch and fondle you. i want to romance you over candlelit dinners and watch 'when harry met sally' with you on the couch. say you'll be mine xxx

looks i'm loving in april

cheryl at oshun

a few months ago

this week

i've been having my hair done at oshun in noordhoek for 3 years now and have always come away smiling. owner and stylist cheryl (the only hairstylist seemingly on earth who understands the words 'trim' and 'natural'), has a knack for knowing what style will suit you, even if you don't. she convinced me to go natural, from the terrible highlights i'd been having for years, and i've never looked back. she also consistently reminds me to grow my hair, preferring not to hack into it like every other stylist. her beautiful salon is situated in the red herring village near the beach in noordhoek in a rustic building that she owns, surrounded by milkwoods, soothing sights and sounds. i'd suggest making a day of it and booking a mani or pedi with the onsite therapist as well. i love cheryl and so will you. oshun hair and spa: 021 789-1494 plan your day around it, her prices are worth it.

dear future bearded husband

dear future bearded husband, please buy me every heart-shaped le creuset thing there is. visiting the 'i want that' blog just reminded me of the heart-shaped beauties i saw at a mall a few weeks ago. and they were only r499!

flares for curvy girls?

can curvy girls wear the new flared denim trend? yes they can! flares happen to be one of the more flattering cuts for bulky thighs, as long as you remember these golden rules:

*dark denim is good, faded is bad.
*no pockets
*no pleats
*the flare shouldn't be wider than your thighs
*pair them with pretty, loose fitting yet flattering feminine blouses to hide tummies
*wear slightly heeled boots and wedges to add height, therefore creating a slimming effect
*try on pairs in different sizes to find your perfect match

national cleavage day

vanessa paradis, who possesses that certain je ne sais quois

all the feminists on twitter are getting awfully riled up about national cleavage day. i think it's because they don't have cleavages, but don't quote me on that. i think that women are gorgeous creatures, that should celebrate their femininity whenever possible. i don't specifically advocate rocking a cleavage as 'celebrating femininity' but am more adverse to women trying to be masculine. we seem to have lost the awareness of how empowering it is to be feminine somewhere along the way, that is, everywhere except in france. french women have always held the secret. they're guardians of the feminine. so let's all stop getting angry about national cleavage day (because it's only a gimmick) and act like the fairer sex for a change.

marianas at owls barn

Marianas

marianasgarden2

'marianas at owls barn' is one of cape town's most treasured country restaurants - loved by locals, international visitors and critics alike. in a country cottage setting in the small overberg village of stanford, overlooking vegetable gardens, fruit trees and the mountains beyond, marianas offers discerning foodies an unpretentious taste of cape cuisine, with french and italian influences. furnished with mismatching vintage furniture, a light colour palette and minimalist decor, the interior feels like a serene backdrop to its people, food and the aromas of rosemary wafting from the kitchen.

receiving top ratings in the rossouw food guide, three years in a row, and winner of eat-outs 'best country kitchen' award, marianas is not only an experience in delicious cuisine, but a return to the practice of leisurely lunches. i've been enjoying mariana and peter esterhuizen's wonderful fare since they opened at owls barn around nine years ago, often visiting three times a weekend. i'm proud to boast that i've sampled almost all their food, from gruyere souffles and lamb shank, through to their humble chicken pies (stuffing my wicker basket full of muesli, bread, fresh vegetables, eggs, mayonnaise and biscotti from the deli at the same time).

a decade ago, marianas was my introduction to dining at a restaurant where the ingredients were sourced almost entirely from the garden. the beautiful kitchen garden produces herbs, vegetables and bulges at the seams with fruit trees such as guava, citrus, quince, fig and pomegranate. mariana has been bottling her own olives for many years and beamed with pride when she told me about receiving their first batch of locally pressed olive oil recently. mariana and peter's philosophy of sourcing ingredients as close to home as possible, is one of the elements that form part of the restaurant's kitchen sorcery; also benefiting local dairy farms, fisherman and suppliers in the overberg region. mariana and her helpers toil all week to produce food for the restaurant and deli. everything is made from scratch, from handmade pasta, to breads, sauces and pickles, infusing everything with the essence that makes the food so delicious. but above all, there is heart in everything that comes out of the kitchen at marianas, and you'll taste it in every morsel.

bicycle happy

saturdaystanford

stanford is a dream for leisure cyclists - serious cyclists too, if you venture out of town. i loved being able to cycle everywhere for a week, never using my car once. hopefully soon south africans will start commuting on their bicycles without giving it a second thought and not reserve their cycling purely for 100km exercise routines over the weekend.

the snood

i'm loving these knitted snoods from woolies. hello! please will someone (like lauren fowler) make them too please!

my mother's shop

1. antique oak bed and other beauties

My mother's shop

i visited my mother's shop at the entrance of her hotel, called 'the baby boomer' shop, where she has accumulated a selection of beautiful vintage and antique finds. she called it the 'baby boomer' shop as she's collected things that remind her of her own childhood from the baby boomer era. she's sourced items all the way from menerbes in france, where her sister lives, through to karoo villages.
1. the antique oak double bed pictured first is R4500 and is draped with a hand-knitted cotton spread from the 1900's, sourced from the south of france (R5500). the handmade quilt is from swellendam and is R800. the mahogany washstand with original tiles is R3500 and the child's oak cupboard (which was once my son's) is R4500. the mosquito nets are made locally by kiwi nets.

2. posing with a mannequin wearing my old school uniform from st.cyps!
3. my mother is holding a 1900's cotton lace curtain from france which is R3800
4. various beautiful vintage framed prints, starting from R800.

my mother, penny, is offering a 10% discount on all the items in her store until the end of june, if you print out or email this post to her!

graze

jero making focaccia

Graze - Stanford

i've waited all week for 'graze' to open their doors, since arriving in stanford - a village which already has a few restaurants on the foodie map. my friends, jero and catch, own this delightful italian slow food cafe tucked behind an unassuming entrance, opposite my mother's hotel in queen victoria street. i was greeted by the scent of freshly baked bread and coffee as i entered the small sunlit cafe and immediately noticed the attention to detail invested in every nook and cranny - from the vintage chairs and tables, through to storage jars, vintage jugs, bowls, cookbooks, pots and pans. both catch and jero are of italian heritage and have been around passionate cooks their whole lives. jero has attended chef courses in italy, studying under some of the finest italian chefs in the world and catch owns a beautiful rustic villa on the slopes of a tiny town in italy. catch and jero moved to stanford a few years ago to escape the manic lifestyle of working 7 days a week in the rag trade and design industries and have since had twin boys, created an award winning natural vegetable garden and opened 'graze'. the menu is based on fresh ingredients from their vegetable garden and is therefore seasonal and bursting with flavour.

breakfast at graze was a treat, which i washed down with a heart-poundingly strong cappuccino and jero's freshly baked 'ciabatta de mare' was the best i've ever tasted. i tried to take in as many details as i could and imagined doing a 'trolley dash' through the deli section, which groans under the weight of imported italian ingredients. but i won't waffle on any longer - just come through and try it for yourself. i hope to rope some friends into visiting for lunch tomorrow, as fresh pasta finished off with chocolate torte for dessert, makes me weak in the knees.
