birdland

His father died and left him a little farm in new england.
All the long black funeral cars left the scene
And the boy was just standing there alone
Looking at the shiny red tractor
Him and his daddy used to sit inside
And circle the blue fields and grease the night.
It was if someone had spread butter on all the fine points of the stars
'cause when he looked up they started to slip.
Then he put his head in the crux of his arm
And he started to drift, drift to the belly of a ship,
Let the ship slide open, and he went inside of it
And saw his daddy 'hind the control board streamin' beads of light,
He saw his daddy 'hind the control board,
And he was very different tonight
'cause he was not human, he was not human.

And then the little boy's face lit up with such naked joy
That the sun burned around his lids and his eyes were like two suns,
White lids, white opals, seeing everything just a little bit too clearly
And he looked around and there was no black ship in sight,
No black funeral cars, nothing except for him the raven
And fell on his knees and looked up and cried out,
“no, daddy, don't leave me here alone,
Take me up, daddy, to the belly of your ship,
Let the ship slide open and I'll go inside of it
Where you're not human, you are not human.”

But nobody heard the boy's cry of alarm.
Nobody there 'cept for the birds around the new england farm
And they gathered in all directions, like roses they scattered
And they were like compass grass coming together into the head of a shaman bouquet
Slit in his nose and all the others went shooting
And he saw the lights of traffic beckoning like the hands of blake
Grabbing at his cheeks, taking out his neck,
All his limbs, everything was twisted and he said,
“i won't give up, won't give up, don't let me give up,
I won't give up, come here, let me go up fast,
Take me up quick, take me up, up to the belly of a ship
And the ship slides open and I go inside of it where I am not human.”

I am helium raven and this movie is mine,
So he cried out as he stretched the sky,
Pushing it all out like latex cartoon, am I all alone in this generation ?
We'll just be dreaming of animation night and day
And won't let up, won't let up and I see them coming in,
Oh, I couldn't hear them before, but I hear 'em now,
It's a radar scope in all silver and all platinum lights
Moving in like black ships, they were moving in, streams of them,
And he put up his hands and he said, “it's me, it's me,
I'll give you my eyes, take me up, oh now please take me up,
I'm helium raven waitin' for you, please take me up,
Don't let me here,” the son, the sign, the cross,
Like the shape of a tortured woman, the true shape of a tortured woman,
The mother standing in the doorway letting her sons
No longer presidents but prophets
They're all dreaming they're gonna bear the prophet,
He's gonna run through the fields dreaming in animation
It's all gonna split his skull
It's gonna come out like a black bouquet shining
Like a fist that's gonna shoot them up
Like light, like mohammed boxer
Take them up up up up up up
Oh, let's go up, up, take me up, I'll go up,
I'm going up, I'm going up
Take me up, I'm going up, I'll go up there
Go up go up go up go up up up up up up up
Up, up to the belly of a ship.
Let the ship slide open and we'll go inside of it
Where we are not human, we're not human.

Well, there was sand, there were tiles,
The sun had melted the sand and it coagulated
Like a river of glass
When it hardened he looked at the surface
He saw his face
And where there were eyes were just two white opals, two white opals,
Where there were eyes there were just two white opals
And he looked up and the rays shot
And he saw raven comin' in
And he crawled on his back and he went up
Up up up up up up
Sha da do wop, da shaman do way, sha da do wop, da shaman do way,
Sha da do wop, da shaman do way, sha da do wop, da shaman do way,
Sha da do wop, da shaman do way,
We like birdland.

tangled up in blue

...one of your only status updates on facebook included an excerpt from this bob dylan song...

Early one mornin', the sun was shinin'
He was lyin' in bed
Wonderin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red

Her folks, they said, our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough

And he was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on his shoes
Heading out for the old East Coast
Lord knows, he's paid some dues gettin' through
Tangled up in blue

She was married when they first met
Soon to be divorced
He helped her out of a jam, I guess
But he used a little too much force

And they drove that car as far as they could
Abandoned it out west
And split up on a dark sad night
Both agreein' it was best

And she turned around to look at him
'Cause he was walkin' away
She said, "This can't be the end
We'll meet on another day, on the avenue"
Tangled up in blue

He had a job in the old North Woods
Workin' as a cook for a spell
But he never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell

When he drifted down to L.A.
Where he reckoned to try his luck
Workin' for a while on an airplane plant
Loading cargo on to a truck

But all the while he was alone
The past was close behind
He'd seen a lot of women
But she never escaped his mind, and he just grew
Tangled up in blue

She was workin' in a topless place
I stopped in for beer
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear

And later on, as the crowd thinned out
I was about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, "What's your name?"

I muttered somethin' underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue

She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello", she said
"You look like the silent type"

Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century

And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul, from me to you
Tangled up in blue

He was always in a hurry
Too busy or too stoned
And everything that she ever planned
Just had to be postponed

We thought they were successful
She thought they were blessed
With objects and material things
But I never was impressed

And when it all came crashin' down
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue

So now I'm going back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now

Some are mathematicians
Some are doctor's wives
Don't know how it all got started
Don't know what they're doin' with their lives

But me, I'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in blue

no bake cheescake in a jar

the first of around 10 entries to my 'beatnik foodie challenge' that i'm choosing to feature, is this flippen' awesome 'no-bake cheesecake' in a jar, submitted by renee nesbitt. renee originally submitted this to spatula - yuppiechef's online magazine.

This no-bake cheesecake is a doddle to prepare and the cute packaging is guaranteed to impress.
Ingredients (serves 4):
200g plain cream cheese
5 tbsp caster sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice
120ml fresh cream, whipped
2 cups of granola (I used vanilla and seed granola)
250g fresh strawberries, sliced
These Kitchen Craft Home Made jars work well. You can find them on Yuppiechef.
Method:
1.
Fill the bottom of each jar with a layer of granola (approximately 125ml each).
2. Place the cream cheese, lemon juice and caster sugar in a bowl and beat together.

3. Using a metal spoon, fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Divide this mixture between the jars, spreading evenly over the granola base (I used a mini spatula for this).

4. Seal the jars and place in the freezer for 1 hour to set.
5. Remove from the freezer and top with the sliced strawberries (or any fruit topping of your choice).

6. Keep in the fridge until you’re ready to pack your picnic basket!

And there we have it. Thank you, Renee!

if i was a rich girl

i can't understand how it's possible, but my housework is taking me up to 6 hours a day. seriously. i also have 2000m2 of garden to maintain, with a vegetable garden, fruit trees and potted plants, which all need watering too. so, it's all kicked off an 'if i was a rich girl' fantasy, which i'm about to make you endure.

i don't have a dishwasher, and could really do with one to save myself 2 of the 6 hours of housework that i'm currently having to grit my teeth through. i could also make use of a food processor, like this kitchenaid beauty below. i often find myself wanting to whip something up, with nothing to whip it with. this is a problem.

my lounge suite also sucks and is lowering the whole tone of my beautiful home, so i could do with a beautiful sofa or two from casamento or o.live, thank you!  these are not luxuries people, these are must-haves. now let's touch on soft furnishings. the problem with having my own shop is that i never keep a thing for myself, thus, i have found myself cushion-less. i'd love these sage numbers by moonbasket, available at vamp, or these new skinnylaminx honeys, which would just brighten up my life. i'll also take a few of those eames chairs from vamp furniture if you don't mind, and a lashing of cookware from woolworths, while we're at it. finally, a few summer weight throws from the woolies online shop would round this whole wishlist off quite nicely.

a foodie challenge

dear twitter foodies,

i'm opening a coffee shop this november, in the little river town of stanford, and i'm challenging all the wonderful foodies on twitter to come up with one awesome breakfast, light lunch or sweet dish that can be served in a JAR and look good at the same time. the winning recipes will be named after YOU and served in my coffee shop

please bear in mind that the recipes need to be simple - this is the country, so i can't source truffles and petal syrup at the drop of a hat :)

guidelines: simple, economical, can be served in a jar and look good at the same time, easily sourced ingredients and unpretentious.

the best recipes will be featured on this blog as they arrive in my inbox, if you send through a lovely photograph of the process and/or finished product! the shape of my jars are similar to the top picture of the mason jar - short and stout.

i hope you take up the challenge, dear foodies, as this could be the first 100% twitter contributed menu i've ever heard of!

please send your recipes and images to beatnikbazaar at g mail dot com. keep them coming in - i'll just keep on featuring them! my jars are from consol, and they are jar #50239901 - you can view it here

goodbye 10kg's - don't ever come back!

i've lost 10kg's since may or june, and i don't really know how. i know i've cut down dramatically on my chocolate intake, and i walk with my son every evening. i think stress has been a factor too - moving stress, income stress.... so here's to the next 10kg! i've already started cycling daily because i know the next 10kg's are going to be a challenge. it's almost summer though, which means no comfort food and tons of salad, so that should help towards the greater good. goodbye 10kg's - don't you ever come back now, you hear!

courtyard coffee shop - preview
