budget meals under R50 for two

chicken pot pies, with two chicken breasts (+- R22), frozen puff pastry (+- R8), cream (+- R10) and portion mushrooms (R10).

 lentil soup

sliced pork steak (R25 for a large steak) and homemade coleslaw (+- R5) wraps (+-R15 for 4)

chicken (chicken pieces +- R25) casserole with potatoes and veg (R20)

whole chicken (R40), roasted, with leftovers used in broths, soups and pies, serve with coleslaw (R10)

butter chicken (chicken breasts x 2 +- R22) with greek yoghurt (R15), or channa dal (split chickpeas and other ingredients +- R30 altogether)

spag (R10) and meat balls (mince R25, breadcrumbs, onion, chutney and parsley +- R12)

chilli con carne (large mince R30. yoghurt, rice, coriander, chilli +- R20)

get a casserole dish and make a meal out of the things hanging about in your fridge! top mince with mash and you have a delicious, comforting shepherd's pie

flat bread (dough can be bought for R6.99 at spar) with affordable toppings, all of which could be homegrown.

asian lettuce (grow your own) wraps - wrap just about anything and sprinkle with different homemade asian dipping sauces, chilli and lime

rosemary flat bread (R6.99) with fresh, salad toppings, such as avo (R3.00), rocket (grow your own) and slices of sirloin or rump (R35)

prego roll (make your own) with steak (R35 for a larger sirloin steak to share) or chicken (+-R25)

platters, with homemade guacamole, tzaziki and salsa with strips of steak (a large rump or sirloin is +- R30) in a pita (+- R8 for 2)

i'm no 'chef type', by any stretch of the imagination, but i have had to feed a child for ten years of my life and boy, have i had to budget! if there are any foodie types reading this, perhaps you can contribute some more ideas, as these are merely the dinner experiments of a mere mortal. i see some shops offering family meal ideas for R100 and i start thinking...R100 x 7 days a week = single parents need better options! so here are some of the suppers i make for my son and i, for around R50. i have many more posts planned, so i hope you find this one useful.

A certain shop has raised it to meal ideas for under R150 now. Does anyone struggle to eat in for under R150?

You are the best. Mine will be meals for 3 but the other two are mini at the moment. Phew. A lot of relief here. Will have to plan meals better in future.
