autumn kimono

have you seen this kimono dress on the 36boutiques website? i'd team it with these sage t-bar platforms and the leather clutch, from my friend taryn gruber's range of exquisite handbags (by gruber and whale) also available on the 36boutiques website!

real mayan hot chocolate recipe

real mayan hot chocolate from the film 'chocolat', just in time for this time of moveable feasting:

2 cups boiling water
1 chilli pepper, cut in half, seeds removed  (with gloves)

5 cups light cream or whole or nonfat milk

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

1 to 2 cinnamon sticks

8 ounces bittersweet chocolate or
3 tablets Mexican Chocolate, cut into 1/4-inch pieces

2 tablespoons granulated sugar or honey, or to taste
l tablespoon almonds or hazelnuts, ground extra fine

Whipped cream

In a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add chile pepper to boiling water. Cook until liquid is reduced to 1 cup. Remove chile pepper; strain water and set aside.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine cream or milk, vanilla bean and cinnamon stick until bubbles appear around the edge. Reduce heat to low; add chocolate and sugar or honey; whisk occasionally until chocolate is melted and sugar dissolves. Turn off heat; remove vanilla bean and cinnamon stick. Add chile-infused water, a little at a time, tasting to make sure the flavor isn't too strong. If chocolate is too thick, thin with a little more milk.
Serve in small cups and offer ground almonds or hazelnuts and whipped cream.

blown away by winter

i'm blown away by these beautiful winter goodies at 36boutiques (yes, i'm obsessed now and i can't stop adding things to my wishlist!). a few of these items were listed as having 6 in stock and were then depleted down to 1, as i was adding them to my wishlist, within seconds. flip! i love that there are folky, feminine choices available to those of us who prefer that aesthetic, which are also totally affordable. i don't know what people living in the country did before you, 36boutiques, but i'm grateful i'll never have to find out ;)

food styling

i'm so intrigued by food styling and how it can be so right or so very wrong. i'm drawn to this styling at the moment, as pictured on the 'simply breakfast' blog. if i had to publish a cookbook, i would want everything to feel as if it were being eaten off a thick, long wooden feasting table from the medieval era, inside a crumbling castle - rustic and masculine - like heathcliff prepared it. romantic? possibly.

my home in a magazine!

i'm so excited to see my very first home interiors shoot in a magazine! please look out for the may issue of 'home' magazine out on the shelves in april.

human rights day

i spent human rights day hosting a tea party at my house, with cupcakes baked by my favourite two sisters - with photography by the younger 10-year-old! i think her photos of me pouring tea, the swans and deer are brilliant. stanford children - they're just in a different league.

boots!

winter is oh so imminent and i've had a look at boots (which i will be living in, here in the country) on the 36boutiques site. loving these new additions...if you cast your mind back to a few posts ago, you'll know why i'm turning my sights to ordering clothing and shoes online - i now live in fleeceville, which is the capital of croc town, located roughly at the corner of tracksuit pant and velvet zip top.

i thought they'd go very nicely with these autumn goodies below
